Using Collada Export

Tuesday, November 18 2008

SolidWorks now has the ability to export assemblies into COLLADA format, an open standard for interchanging 3D models between different applications.

We have created a video to demonstrate its use and give a few tips on making the most of the exporter.

O que é Collada?

I would like to write an Add-in that uses the Collada Exporter but I need a way to call the exporter within a VB macro...is there an API that allow this? I already tried to record a macro and edit it later, but the exporting action is not recorded...also I'd like to eventually skip the exporter's options dialog.

If it is useful, I managed also to get a reference to the exporter from VB but I don't know what functions are available.

Thanks!

I am trying to get a very simple animation to export and can't seem to get it to work. Where can I send the file?

Does it export joints correctly?
i couldnt find a way to detect a scene graph in the exported DAEs, just the parts, positioned as in the Solid-Project, but no Hierarchy between them.

So it looks to me, like the kniematics of an assembly is lost through COLLADA-Export, right?

This is a workaround for the italian users with italian Windows XP installed to use Collada Export Add-In.

Just rename the folder:
C:\Programmi\SolidWorks\SW Collada Add-in\lang\english
created by the collada installer in
C:\Programmi\SolidWorks\SW Collada Add-in\lang\italian

Hello!!!! Here my report:

I have forgotten to switch on COLLADA check box in my Add-Ins list.
Now the problem is solved.
Today, I exported my file in COLLADA format. Then, when I import it into 3DMax 2009, I get an error: Corrupted Collada document: malformed XML.
Is there somethig I need to do in SolidWorks or 3DMax to fix this problem?

Thanks a lot

Anton,

Perhaps rus is not the correct folder?

Try to create this directory instead:

C:\Program Files\SolidWorks\SW Collada Add-in\lang\russian

Then copy the resource dll into it.

If you don't see COLLADA in your Add-Ins list, perhaps it didn't install correctly and you need to try the installation again?

Thanks again for your feedback, and please report your results back to the group.

Hello,
I can't import assembly files (in Blender or 3ds) which was saved in SWx2009 as collada file (export to Collada).

Another problem. When I export a (relatively) simple cubesat model, all the rigid bodies have an inertia of [ 0.01, 0.01, 0.01 ] which is not right...
Ken wrote on Tuesday, May 5 2009
I found the reason for the non-dynamic part. That part was fixed. When I made it float, it exported as dynamic.

When exporting a model in Collada format, one or more parts from my assembly is always marked as not dynamic, but I can't figure out why. Can anyone clue me in? Thx!

I'm using Collada Export for SolidWorks to transfer files to 3DMax.
Then when I import it into 3DMax, I get an error saying that it cannot find the texture files (jpeg, bmp,....)

Is there somethig I need to do in SolidWorks or 3DMax to fix this problem?

How do I specify what texture files 3dMax should open with collada?

Thx

Massimo

If my school has SolidWorks 2008-2009 academic edition, will this add on work?

Considering that x64 is the preferred environment for SolidWorks, I'm kind of disappointed that it will not work there. Will this be ported to x64 anytime soon?

If you're seeing the "Save As Collada" icon greyed out, then it's likely that you do not have a motion study of an assembly highlighted. This confusion is something that we hope to address in future versions of the Add-In.

Stay tuned...

HI,

Got same problem as os. As I'm running SW in french I created a french folder & copy the dll : works fine := seems to be a problem for all non english languages.

For the greyout "save as collada", I got it greyed when in model tab, but works fine when in motion tab.

Personally I would have put the icon directly into the motion tab, next to the "save avi" one.

Thanks to SW Labs teem.

After Installing Collada in SolidWorks 2009 SP1....when I go to Files/ Sava As Collada is greyout....why?
os wrote on Tuesday, December 9 2008
Charles,

yea, copy the english resource dll to the german directory works fine :-)

Thnaks a lot.
Charles (SW Labs QA) wrote on Monday, December 8 2008
os,

I think that it's very likely that you've ran into a problem with running the Add-In in a foreign language operating system. You could try to make a copy of the resource dll found here:

C:\Program Files\SolidWorks\SW Collada Add-in\lang\english

... and paste it to a new directory:

C:\Program Files\SolidWorks\SW Collada Add-in\lang\german

The other thing that you could try is to change your Regional settings in Windows as a test, but I understand if you'd prefer not to change that setting.

Thanks again for your feedback, and please report your results back to the group.

Hey this is a really cool add in. I will give it a try. I hope it works. Great thinking there SolidWorks Labs.

Wich Software requirement do Collada export have?
* SolidWorks 2009 SP0 or later - The Add-In will not run on older versions
* MS Windows XP/Vista x32 - There is currently no x64 support

I have all what you mentioned but it does not start. I got the errormessage:
"Collada expor canot be loaded. missing adin or one of its components."
(I hope I translated it right fom geman ;-)

Best Regards
